Sustainable renovation with timber-frame construction

At Carpentier, we rethink the way we build by producing offsite walls for home renovations on the latest machines. Our timber-frame façade, roof extension and home extension in timber-frame construction meet the latest standards and feature biobased insulation, timber cladding or other types of finishing such as brick slips, etc. They are also perfectly compatible with other building methods.

Renovation options with timber-frame construction

More than half of the homes in Flanders were built before 1970. Back then, there were no guidelines or proper insulation as we know them today. To achieve a climate-neutral EU by 2050, the Flemish government launched the Renovation Pact on top of the Green Deal. This means that every home will have to be as energy-efficient as a new-build home. But how can you renovate an older home to meet these requirements? A timber-frame renovation offers the perfect solution. Our timber-frame walls are self-supporting and perfectly compatible with all types of construction.

Timber-frame façade

To make a home or building more energy-efficient, better façade insulation is often the answer. To achieve this in an efficient, fast and faultless way, a timber-frame façade can offer the perfect solution. Your new façade is fully prefabricated in our workshop. We fit the timber-frame façade with biobased insulation that meets the insulation standards set out in Europe's Green Deal. This guarantees you a long-term solution right from the start.

An added advantage is that Carpentier can immediately fit the cladding of your choice. That way, you get the look you want delivered straight away.

Good to know

In addition to transport costs, as a builder you can also save on scaffolding. With a timber-frame façade, there's no need for scaffolding to install and finish the façade. Ideal for environments with a lot of passing traffic or limited space.

Roof extension or home extension

Does your client want to extend their existing home in a sustainable and circular way? In that case too, a renovation with timber-frame construction is an ideal building method for you. We produce all the necessary elements in advance in our workshop, fitted with the required insulation. What's more, we always keep a large stock of timber-frame products such as I-joists, LVL beams and GL beams in house. We can CNC machine these in our own workshop. Why renovate or remodel with timber-frame construction?

As you may already know, timber-frame construction offers numerous advantages as an alternative building method to traditional options. We're happy to list all the benefits for you:

  • Space-saving: timber-frame walls are thinner, which means you gain interior space. But the space required on the building site is also more limited. Scaffolding doesn't have to stay up for weeks, and storing the walls takes up far less time on the building site.
  • Faster: timber-frame construction is faster than masonry. Everything is produced in advance in our workshop, there's no impact from weather conditions and the margin for error is much smaller. Thanks to this efficient production method, the building process can be completed more quickly, allowing you to move in sooner or benefit from rental income sooner.
  • Insulation to the latest standards: in the workshop, we already provide biobased insulation that meets today's standards.
  • Sustainable and circular: timber-frame construction is an ecological building method. The material used grows back naturally, and CO2 emissions are considerably lower since transport can take place in a single trip.

Biobased insulation

At Carpentier, we prefer to use biobased insulation such as wood fibre or hemp. These biobased insulation materials are natural materials and contribute to the circular character of timber-frame construction.

An added advantage of this ecological insulation is that it not only keeps the home warm in winter, but also cooler in summer. Wood fibre, for example, keeps the heat out up to three times longer in summer, which can make a difference of up to 8 degrees indoors. So biobased insulation provides greater comfort.

The European guidelines

The EU's ambition is to be climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this goal, Europe has set out a great many guidelines. One of these concerns the energy efficiency of buildings. Research by Eurostat has shown that our buildings are responsible for 40% of total energy consumption. That is why the European Commission set out to:

  • Oblige member states to renovate at least 3% of public buildings every year;
  • Ensure that 49% of the energy consumption of buildings comes from renewable energy by 2030;
  • Introduce an obligation for member states to increase the share of renewable energy for heating and cooling by 1% each year.

It was also stated that the current rate of renovation must at least double in order to achieve these objectives.
