Barnwood visibly carries its past with it. The weathered surface, subtle tones and rough texture give every board a character that simply cannot be imitated. At Carpentier you will find both Canadian and European barnwood: reclaimed wood with character, ready for a new chapter in a façade, interior or bespoke project.
Our barnwood consists mainly of old softwood around 200 years old, sourced from barns in Europe and Canada. We also offer European barnwood in oak. These boards are given a second life with us in applications where appearance and authenticity take centre stage.
Barnwood is surprisingly versatile. Outdoors it delivers cladding with a strong, lived-in look. Indoors it instantly adds warmth, relief and atmosphere to kitchens, floors, ceilings, doors, wall panelling, shelving and bespoke furniture. In renovations of farmhouses, mansions or characterful outbuildings in particular, barnwood enhances the soul of the project.

At Carpentier we work with both European and Canadian barnwood. No two boards are identical, and that is precisely where the charm lies. European barnwood often displays a lively gradation of colour with shades of grey, black and brown. We deliberately seek out batches with as many weathered nuances as possible.
Canadian barnwood usually looks slightly more uniform, although here too the occasional board with a surprising touch of colour appears. Both varieties have a distinct identity of their own and instantly give a project more depth.
Our barnwood is generally dry to air-dried with a moisture content between 12 and 20%. For outdoor applications we recommend installing the boards vertically. If you use barnwood as wall or ceiling panelling indoors, allow the wood to acclimatise for at least one week before installation.
